I've been having a strange problem with QuickTime in OS X. The program works fine, but I can't install updates. Clicking on "Update Now..." after clicking on the "Update or install QuickTime software" radio button in the QuickTime pane of System Preferences causes the Software Update program to launch.
Software Update then gives an error message saying: Your Software Updates cannot be shown because one or more of the updates contains incorrect information. To see if the problem has been fixed, click Update Now in the Software update pane of System Preferences."Doing as the message says brings up no new updates.
Furthermore, clicking on the "Install new 3rd-party QuickTime software" radio button in the QuickTime Update pane brings up the QuickTime Update program. Clicking on the "Custom" button shows the On2 and ZyGoVideo codecs with no update available (I had installed these earlier) and a QuickTime Update, shown as "Not Installed".
Clicking the checkbox next to the QuickTime Update listing and then clicking the "Update Now" button simply quits the program. The file size for the update is shown as 0 KB. Clicking the checkbox next to the two codecs does the same thing, instead of reinstalling them.
I want to reinstall QuickTime, but there is no compatible installer on Apple's QuickTime website. Moving QuickTime files out of the various Library folders merely causes the updater to say that QuickTime is damaged and needs to be reinstalled. Help! How can I fool the Software Updater to reinstall QuickTime? I have a G4 with OS X 10.1.1.
