IE 5.2 for OS X is now available from Microsoft Mactopia (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/).
It is a standalone updater, the first for IE for OS X, I think. It is not in Software Update.

First thing: it has one of the braindead Installer Vise installers that quits all open apps.
Second thing: it resets your home page to point to MSN. How thoughtful of them!
Does anyone else not care for Quartz text smoothing in web browsers? I'm glad IE 5.2 has the option (in "Interface Extras") to turn it off. I wish one could do the same in Chimera.

I guess I don't mind the smoothing too much, but I work at a higher resolution than a lot of folks.
A possible silver lining: I have yet to experience the IE bug that forces one to refresh the screen because it first drew it and then it goes blank. That would be significant. Can people verify this?

Chimera used to have the ability to turn off AA - it even had a keyboard shortcut (CMD \) but it looks like 0.3.0 relies on the update from 10.1.5:

Still busted!
About the blank screen problem, Craig, I think I've experienced this and have found a different solution. Next time it happens, try using the "select all" command (command-a). This method works to show the content of the page for me and I don't have to refresh it. Let me know if it works for you.

and the brain-dead installer. and that it dropped it's install log in the root dir.
what the hell?!
MacBU surely know better?! by now? do they have to hand their product over to windoze QA for final production?!

Is there really any good reason to upgrade? Not that I use that browser very much, but just wondering. Will the older version break on 10.2?

It seems a little more stable than 5.1.4. As for Jag Final compatibility, that would be a game of seven card stud, I believe.
I just hope the Installer issues are worked out by then.

Installers that insist on quitting all my apps REALLY piss me off. I mean, I can install Photoshop, InDesign, BBEdit etc with all my apps running, but then I want to install MSN Messenger, and suddenly it's "Woah! I might break if other apps are running!"
Microsoft can't seem to break out of the "design for windows' crapness" mind-set. No, really guys - When another OS says something will work, they ACTUALLY mean it! Crazy I know...
Rant ends :)

reports that the update does not change the user's saved preferences file per se, but rather the system's general Internet preferences. Although we are not 100% certain, we suspect that the update is altering OS X so that whenever the IE needs a home page address, and one is not supplied by the user preferences, the MSN.com will be used as a default. Mr. Lapeyre writes: "IE 5.2 does not depend on System Preferences information, the home page address is encrypted and saved inside the com.apple.internetconfig.plist preference file under the key '4D534945•WWWHomePage.' By default, immediately after IE 5.2 installation, the MSN home page address will be written under that key. The key seems specific to Internet Explorer and doesn't appear to affect any software except IE." ............
my question is what would happen if you deleted com.apple.internetconfig.plist preference file would anything bad happen and would you then be able to keep what ever homepage u wanted . any thoughts

Are you all saying that you can't set your own homepage in IE?

I had no trouble whatsoever in changing my home page back to what it was previously.
In addition, Chimera, which uses only the home page as configured in the Internet pref pane, goes where I set it. I don't think the Internet pref pane value was touched by the IE update, but can't swear to it.
It's just a rude annoyance, as near as I can tell.

What's the big deal with IE 5.2? Apart from all the nuisances that people have already mentioned (quit all apps for installation, takes you to msn at start, blank screen...etc), it is slow compared to Mozilla and Chimera...No tabs, no search from the address bar, a really crappy MS product.
I hope openOffice is out soon in Aqua so I can stop using MS products altogether!

was it the dumbass IE installer that left "Developer VISE Moved Items" in /System?
and i thought that only the "system" was supposed to write to /System...

Has anyone tried to implement the Google search in the address field by editing line 42 of the Localized.rsrc file of IE 5.2? I'm still running 5.1.4 and have been using that Google search method for quite a while and don't want to give it up. (the one where you type in '? searchterm' and then hit return)
Also, I have had the blank page scenario since way back to OS 10.0.4 although I don't get it very often since maybe around 10.1.3. I never tried the select all method but a refresh worked just fine. I know I've had the scenario happen in 10.1.4 with IE 5.1.4, although rare, but it's been at least a couple of weeks, possibly since the upgrade to 10.1.5. If I wind up not upgrading IE to 5.2, the next time it happens I will try the select all method and post back the result.

I used a spare local partition to test this myself since it seems that nobody else uses this method besides me anymore. Anyway, it works just like it used to in 5.1.4, so, no problems implementing that Google search in the addy bar by editing Localized.rsrc, although I did have to change some ownership and permissions on the file as well as strip it of type and creator code stuff because it came through with an Eudora icon. Weird, huh?
I had to change my home page from MSN to blank and it stuck without problem.
I double clicked on a link from within Eudora and it opened up IE and got me the page without problem.
The only thing that will take some getting used to is the font which seems bolder yet a bit fuzzier. (I haven't messed with what TinkerTool might do for this yet)
So far, no pages that haven't rendered with the blank page scenario.

just installed it myself...its zippier.
I had no problems with home page, but then again, I have mine set to "blank" and it retained that setting....but checking the prefs I see it did set it to MSN, but I could replace that without problem.
I don't know, but I installed under root....maybe that is the problem if you install under just normal administrator....anymore, I am ALWAYS installing any program under root...it just causes less hassle.
