Hi there!
We've recently bought OSX for our PowerBook G3, and now I'm trying to get a peripheral device to work (Swift CARDport USB to be exact). The thing is, there are only drivers for Mac OS9, so I have to install the driver into Mac OS9. But how? When I doubleclick the install-file, nothing happens. I can see the icon in the dock (I have configured classic to launch when I start the computer), but then nothing happens, and when I doubleclick it again, it says that I can't open the file since it's already being opened. Can I launch classic mode in such a way that I can actually see the Mac OS9 desktop as I would have, hadn't I installed Mac OSX? Or can I boot from classic mode, without opening OSX?

Please help me! I really don't understand a thing about this classic business, and it would greatly please me if someone could shed some light over the whole situation...

Thanks!

If you open the System Preferences and click on "Startup Disk" it should show your OS 9 System Folder as an option. Select that and reboot. You'll be in 9 (only).

When you want to reboot in OS X go to the 9 Startup Disk CP and select the OS X System and restart.

The odds are that device will not work in Classic without OS X drivers, so you'll need to reboot in 9 to use it.

As a random aside, you may want to not launch classic while logging in. I'm not sure if Apple has fixed them all or not, but several people have had problems related to classic opening at login. They've solved them by just waiting until login completes, and then clicking on the classic icon in the dock.
