Just wanted to mention an excellent experience with a LaCie external Firewire hard drive (80 gigs) recently installed on my BW G3 (rev 1).

My Mac was running and the screen saver was on. I eagerly cracked open the box and plugged the Firewire drive into the port on the back of the Mac. Provided power to the drive and flicked the on switch. Entered my password to quit the screen saver, and there was the drive- all 80 megs of it (well actually about 74 megs because of losses due to formatting)!

Now that's what I call "plug and play".

FireWire drives are clearly one of the coolest things to come about in the last couple of years. When I went home for the holidays, I brought basically my entire home OS X installation with me (MP3 collection excluded ;-) on a Que USB 20gb FireWire drive.

It was so nice being able to take that drive from our iBook to my mom's G4 to help get her set up, and to be able to delete and reinstall OS 9 (I was writing something about Classic and needed to experiment with OS 9 installations) without mucking with the nice, stable installation on the main iBook drive. The fact that the Que drive weighs under a pound and runs great on the FireWire power alone (no brick required) was an added bonus!

I now use it as a super transport for moving big stuff between work and home, and as the home of my "experimental" OS X installations.
