iPod Dock Questions

Hey guys, I'm looking into buying a used dock to make a custom mount for my car eventually and don't want to spend money buying the rest of the stuff that comes with a dock. I'm just curious what comes with a dock when you buy/what do you need to hook up a dock to a computer and stereo? Does it come with cables or do you just use the cables that came with the iPod (the firewire/usb cables)? I'm especially interested in using the stereo line out of the dock. Thanks for the help.

edit: its from a 40gb 3G pod, will this work with a 4g 20g ipod? There are so many nuances that I get confused easily :)

3G and 4G have the same dock connector.

The dock requires just a dock connector to firewire (or USB).

The 40GB is thicker than the 20GB so you need a 40GB dick and the 20GB will fit into it, but there will be a gap at the back in the dock, which may not be very secure in a car environment.

The stereo line is just a standard 3.5mm stereo female connector, same as the one on the top of the iPod, but without volume control.

Maybe if I put it in a car I can just add something (cardboard or fabric) to the inside back to make it more secure.
