Does anyone have any information or experience with some version of Linux or 3rd gen iPods? My friend just loaded some Linus stuff onto his 3rd gen and can now view pretty complex black and white pictures, has more games (i.e tetris and space invaders) and best of all, can record through his headphones and save it on the iPod. It sounds great but I'm a bit weary of installing somthing crazy like that.It requires a downgrade to iPod software 1.4 i think. I believe my friend did it from http://www.ipodlinux.org/Installation

Any insight would be much appreciated

if it's a third gen u don't need to downgrade - the extra features are pretty cool, took me about 5 mins to do it all... you can change font, set wheel sensitivity, it includes a calculator and a heap of games. go for it - i say - until we have macosx for iPods we'll have to do with linux

Annoyingly Linux for iPod seems to be working on every iPod but the 2G mini.

Which is what I own :(

I thought they weren't recommending it for 4G pods, either. :)

They still say it's not officially supported, on the main pages, though. :) Besides, that thread might be a little scary for me (I have a 4G and (obviously) haven't tried it yet. :) )

The thread says its not officially supported :p

I'd still install it for the hell of it just to have it

Now to backup and partition my disk to install Ubuntu ("www.ubuntu.com) :)

Just for amusement I did try this with my 3rd gen iPod. I can't say I really see the point, given the results.

The scroll wheel was psychotic, even with the sensitivity set to the minimum. The games were neat, but things like the calculator were nearly unsable (due to the difficulty with the scroll wheel). And the big issue was that the music playback of an MP3 file was awful. Long time to start playing, and it was all garbled at first (it did stabilize after about ten seconds). Garbled as in "random noise" -- not even identifiable as a song.

I did use the OS X GUI to install iPodLinux, so that may or may not be the most stable version. It was simple to install, and simple to uninstall. And maybe others are getting much better results from their iPodLinux experiements. But mine were totally unsatisfactory.

MACWorld (Rob's new employer) just posted a great article in its July issue.

i noticed that that the wheel sensivity bar goes the opposite ways to what you would expect... if you set it to minimum the wheel is psychotic as you said but at maximum the sensivity it so severely reducedthat i had to go fully around the wheel to move through one menu item

the music playback is terrbile... but it's just got a nice little geek charm that you can run linux on your iPod...

now all i want is osx for iPod... think of how great that would be on an iPod photo

That makes me feel better, actually. Here I was thinking that Linux couldn't do touch pad sensitivity well at all. When I had Ubuntu Linux on my Pismo the track pad was also psychotically sensitive, so a repeat performance wasn't a good sign for Linux.

I figured that was the case. But since my primary use for my iPod is music playing...

Even without a full blown OS X, there are a few apps that would make the iPod much nicer. More games, for example, or a text reader that accepts files over 4 kb. But OS X would be pretty cool.
