Do OS X programs run fine on OS X server? Because I'd like to run the server software, but not at the expense of using any other software.

in my limited experience, OSX server is/was not very like OSX client, but they may be at parity with the latest release.
back when i was running OSX server 10.0 on my beige G3, it was a very Nextish experience (i guess, never ran a NeXT), and sw for the X public beta (that i tried, anyway) would not run on it.
stay tuned, as one of the forum site admins, Craig Arko, will be doing some OSX server mashing pretty soon. i'm keen to hear more about it. especially if apple has made improvements to the product on par with the efforts in OSX client.

Well, this one I can answer based on my whole 1-1/2 days of Server 10.1.2 experience. :D
It sure looks like it can run anything that OS X client can, although some stuff would be redundant since it's already built-in on Server. Furthermore, many, if not all of the Server management apps can be copied over to a client workstation to use for remote management.
Right now, I'm working on getting DNS moved over from my Quadra to let this guy take over as primary for my domain. After that, the mail server and then the Windows services, and finally, the whole NetInfo Domain thing. It's sort of like NT Server in reverse.
Right now my backup strategy is pretty thin, using Jaz carts, but I need to buy a higher capacity SCSI tape drive that will work with Retrospect X, an area which is still in flux.

craig,
thanks for the scoop. had you ever run on prior OSX Server versions?
have you tried mike bombich's ditto backup method?
http://www.bombich.com/mactips/image.html
it's top notch and it works and it's purty fast, if you have the disk resources.
but there are these implications:
- it's a wholesale copy, target files are overwritten
- files existing at the target but not in the source are left alone

Let's see:
No use of the OS X Server 1.x family, but my buddy RacerX has used it and the differences are very great.
I've used Mike's BackItUp and Carbon Copy Cloner Utils, I've just been really hooked on Retrospect's media handling, automation, networking and cross-platform capabilities for a long time (like since version 1.2) so that's what I'd prefer to use in a production environment.

craig,
thanks for the update. *sigh* not enough hours in the day for me to keep up...
re: retrospect, i hear you five by five
one of the things i miss about the OS9 retrospect combo is that i could color code (label? i can't even remember anymore) files/folders with a particulary poopy color and tell retrospect to not back them up. a great feature.
i was weaned on VMS, and VMS ****-data had a switch which allowed you to set a file as noBackup, like the swapfile.
i miss that. another strong argument for a good ****-data filesystem.
