sharing mp3 files over the internet is illegal and is frowned upon on this site. but i'm a nice person so i'll tell you that yes it can be done.
when you download your file open it in iTunes and plug in your iPod. et voila the song goes to your iPod ( if you have the update iPod automatically box checked.)
the second question is even more illegal but anyway...
pop the cd into your computer. go to iTunes and click the import button at the top right of the screen. if you want mp3's over aac's make sure the encoder is set to mp3 encoder. then to name the new mp3 files choose edit>select all and then advanced> get cd track names. if you are connected to the internet, iTunes will name all the mp3 files for you. then drag them to your winmx shared folder ( the folder which you download files to) and they are ready to be uploaded by anyone who wants to do so.

PS: THIS IS ILLEGAL

why is it illegal to burn your own cd's that you have bought with your own money and put them on your iPOD for easier access to it instead of carrying around an inconvenient cd walkman?

just wondering?

I don't think this part is illegal since you can have copies of your songs for personal use. Sharing them is where you are crossing the line.

It isn't and in fact Apple makes it very easy with iTunes.
Not sure why manic_mouse was going on about the illegality. Maybe it was because you mentioned WinMX - something that I'm not familiar with and evidently manic_mouse is.
In anycase, I reiterate, it is not illegal to rip your music CDs to MP3's and put the MP3's on your iPod via iTunes. That is the source of most of the music on most people's iPods.
To answer your original questions, read the Help from iTunes and/or watch Apple's instructional videos, e.g:

that's not illegal at all... it's the fact that you want to share them that's illegal

and winMX is a p2p program - hence the illegality

I think a shorter answer would be:

MP3 files work on the iPod

iTunes can rip songs off of your CDs as MP3 or AAC for use on your computer or iPod.
