I don't know if I shoul dkeep charging battery every day or run it to dead and then re-charge. I think i remember the manual or something saying to let the battery run its full charge and let it completely die.
Also... isn't the new iPod supposed to last 18 hrs? I haven't gotten near that, and I never use the light and I am rarely changing songs, just leave it on shuffle usually/

The laptops and iPods all use lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion works better with shallow charges than deep ones. Running it all the way down every time actually shortens the life of a lithium-ion battery. (With NiCads and NiHM batteries, it's the opposite.)

shuffle burns battery quicker than non-shuffle because it must access the drive more often. If you are playing an album it loads a bunch of the songs into memory which allows it to not access the HD. I would not recommend running the battery all the way down. As previously posted this will actually shorten the life if Li-ion batts.

Thanks, guys. Damn!! Doing it just that one time wouldn't have hurt it too bad, though, right? I could have sworn I read that you're supposed to run it all the way down.
Okay, short charges from now on.

I don't think it would have hurt it. One thing that would though is if you left it for a long time (like a month) without charging it. This would really kill the battery as they do not like a total discharge. If you just ran it until it shut down that shouldn't be a problem as there is still residual charge in the batt. In fact that is how you recalibrate the battery on a PB...not sure if it does a similar thing on the pod. I know about the total discharge thing as that happened to my pod and I maximally got about 4-5 hrs on a full charge until i replaced the battery. By "life" i don't think Styrafome means charge capacity he means how long the battery will last (ie how many times you can charge it and still get full playback time).

Yer l'm sure your right there. The very first time you use the battery it should be fully charged and then fully run down, then after that use short charges.

Replacement batteries are under $40. Use it, don't stress on it, and replace it when needed. Music is hardly fun when you're worried about the battery driving it.

Wow. I thought iPods were done once the battery died. How do you access the battery on a new iPod Mini?

Open it up, unplug the battery, plug in the replacement. I didn't realize the Mini batteries were so cheap...$18.

Well, of course, they have to say that so you don't sue them if you break it.
All the Macs warn you that memory should only be installed by an Apple tech, too.

Are you sure that's the case? I'm pretty sure my iPod builds the shuffle list and then loads however many songs into its cache from that list, so it shouldn't have to access the drive any more often.

empirical data from my 3g pod tells me i don't get as long a batterey life on shuffle.
