Hi,

i have just bought a new imac g5 after years as a pc user. I have an original ipod 20gb (non click wheel) which i have filled with loads of legit music that was imported off cd's into itunes. My pc crashed which lost all of my songs hence me getting fed up with windows and moving to mac!

I have two questions really:
1) Can i plug my ipod straight into my mac and will it undersatnd it. (i would imagine as it has been used by a pc it has been formatted in such a way that a mac couldnt understand it?

2) to save me having to import all of my cds again, could i just use an ipod ripper and import all of my songs from my ipod to my new imac. I guess this ties in with my first question that could i do this traight to mac or would i have to do it to PC and then copy across to the mac?

thanks

1) Yes, your mac will understand it, I have plugged in my friend's iPods before and they showed up on my desktop and in iTunes.

2) Feel free to do whatever you want with your iPod just don't ask for advice on ripping someone elses music. As it seems you have a legit use for this software I find that iPodRip (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20083) works best. There is an option for a full restore of the hard drive and that is what you are looking for.

After you have completed the transfer I do suggest that you reformat the iPod with the newest Mac drivers as you are now using your iPod with an iMac it only makes sense. You can get the update which just came out yesterday here. (http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/) I would do a full on restore and then resync it with iTunes.

Don't Steal Music.

As i own all the cds surely there is nothing illegal in what i am planning to do?

i don't plan to share these files with anyone else so i cannot see it being a legal issue.

thanks for your advice and i will look into ipod "backup" software

That is why I shared what I knew. The reason why I stressed the point of legality is because I, along with the moderators of this site, do not take kindly the stealing of music. Although you yourself are not doing this there are many that are.

Good Luck.

but then again you might like to re-rip it for better quality.
