Does anyone care: I've loaded a decent amount of music into iTunes, in the thousands, and many are complete albums.... Most of that has made it to my iPod....

Now here is where iTunes and iPod need a brain.... If I have songs on a playlist and copy that playlist to my iPod, if I already have downloaded albums containing some of the playlist songs, I wind up with duplicates on the iPod.....

This will happen with everyone.... Why can't we convince Apple to make smarter software so that if you HAVE an exact match on your iPod, it will do exactly what would be done in your Mac music library... just link the song! But nooooo - it has to copy no matter what...

Just a rant.... Does anyone care to add feedback to Apple on this.... I did already for whatever good it'll do!

You do not get duplicates on your iPod. A playlist entry is just a reference to a song in the main library. A song that appears in two or more playlists is not on the iPod multiple times.

...but I just tried it from my iTunes Mac library to my iPod, and wound up with two instances of the song when I checked the iPod library....

Unless something is not working right.....

The only thing that I can think of is that you have a duplicate in iTunes. Other than that, I have never seen this happen.

Really!.... I am very surprised. I MUST have something screwy going on then. I have loaded a lot of my complete albums onto my iPod, never being a big playlist person, but I finally "got it" and so began recreating some of my compilations that i burned to CD or tape.... If I drag a song from the library to the list - of course no problem, it is just the link.... But if I drag that playlist to my iPod.... duped song....

Oh well....! I have songs copied to library set in preferences, perhaps that is the cause??

But if I drag that playlist to my iPod.... duped song....

Why would you do that instead of just syncing with your iPod? Dragging is probably why you have duplicates. Essentially, you're instructing the iPod to create them.

I manually sync my iPod, that is why I drag to the iPod... I don't want everything from my HD on my pod.... I suoppose I could opt to syn the playlists only.... Perhaps that will do it.

Yes, just make a playlist that only contain what you want on the iPod, and sync to that playlist only.
