I have a netgear wireless router (WGR614) and I'm operating an iMac G5 with Tiger and a P4 PC running XP, both of which have working internet access wirelessly. I'm wanting to add a netgear wireless USB print server (WGPS606). The specs on the print server say that it requires PC with Windows 2000 or later which will work fine for now since I'm running XP on my PC. But I'm planning to get rid of the PC. Will the print server still work after I take the PC off the network?
Anyone have any experience getting a netgear print server to work with both Mac and PC?
Thanks.

This is just a guess, but I expect the only dependence on the PC will be for setup of the device -- maybe it copies the windows drivers to the print server, or something like that? Anyway, it should run fine without the PC -- independence is the whole point of having a hardware print server; otherwise you would just attach the printer to the PC and share it from there.
I would say buy it, try it (experiment without the PC), and if it doesn't work for some reason, return it. Chances are good that it will work fine.
Correct. You only need a PC to set the print server up. Once it's configured it won't care what talks to it.
If you need to reconfigure it in the future for some reason just use somebody elses PC.

We bought a few of the Netgears to give us WLAN & printservices in the office. True is that they have the "smart wizard", you cann however configure them using a regular webbrowser / Firefox worked well here!) Just type
http://<ip of the netgear>/basicsetting.htm
into the browsersettings and you should be able to configure the box with just your macs. Printservices were just fine.
To be very frank though, they had quite a few bugs, so we ended up with 3 Airport Express configured WDS on them and used them as WLAN bridges

The following article has all the intructions needed for setting up your Mac OSx to print using the NetGear WGPS606 wireless print server:
Article #317: Netgear WGPS606 Printer Configuration Mini HowTo:

I just set-up my PowerBook G4 (Tiger) to print using the instruction in the above link and it works great!
Enjoy -- I looked everywhere before I found this link!

Spent over 30 minutes on the phone with a Netgear support person who knew very little about Mac's. I tried installing the IP printer with over a dozen different combinations. I followed the instructions given on the cups.com link, also. I tried naming the queue L2, P2, LPT2, LP2, WGPS606, Lexmark, x1100, and others. I tried doing both IP Printing Protocol and LPD/LPR. My printer works with mac via usb. I tried selecting the printer driver for x1100, but 1) is not listed under Lexmark, and 2) when I go through Finder to the library folder containg all the printer drivers (.plist filetype) - There was no plist file available for my model; no selectable file at all for that matter.

Just to follow up to this. i found this thread via google and maybe others will find it too.
It's actually very simple to get the wgps606 to work with tiger (at least 10.2). (And i don't know htf anyone would figure this out given that netgear doesn't have any information on how to do this.
Go to the add printer window. Click on "IP printer" at the top.
Under protocol, select Line Printer Daemon - LPD
Address: Choose the address that you have assigned to the wgps606
Queue: put either: "l1" or "l2" (no quotes) that's el-1 or el-2. use the one that you get when you log into the admin page for the wgps606. The bottom usb port is el-2.
Name - pick a name
location - i left this blank
print using: select your printer. I have an hp 1320 and its working great now. (although i haven't tried printing multiple copies.)

juice78,
Unless you know your printer model is supported by a Gimp-Print driver, it probably won't work. Except for Brother, none of the non-postscript printer manufacturers makes a driver that supports network printing. The drivers all bypass CUPS, so the only comm protocol that works is what is written into the driver - USB
You could check these companies for commercial CUPS drivers that support Lexmark.

Good luck.

I'm new to administrating on a mac, so hopefully my question won't come off as base. Does this setup work for wireless or wired connection to the print server?
Currently in our office, every computer is wirelessly networked to the print server, except mine (I'm running an old first-gen G4 without wireless capabilities). I'm the only mac-user in my office. My tower is hooked up to the ports on the back of the server, and when I try to install my printer, it can't find it on the network. Is there a way for my g4 to search for the printer through the ports or do I have to hook up directly to my printer via usb/firewire? I've looked everywhere for an answer, and maybe I'm just overlooking something simple, but every tutorial I've come across addresses the wireless aspect of installation.
Any help would be much appreciated.
