View Full Version : File Sharing - OSX from OS9 not working

I've got a couple of OSX Macs on a LAN, connected to the Net via a LinkSys Cable/DSL router. I'm using port forwarding on the router to route port 548 to one of the OSX machines which has File Sharing and Appletalk turned on. Users on the outside can connect and share files without any problems if they too are running OSX, but several OS9 users have tried unsuccesfully to connect. (Using "Connect to Server" and my external IP address in the Network Browser) From this, I know that File Sharing is working and port forwarding on the router is working. Appletalk is on and everything seems like it should work, but no joy. It just seems like the machine is invisible to the OS9 clients.
Any hints?

Even MORE basic. My G4/500 running 9.2.1 can SEE my TiBook running 10.1.2, but will not mount, with an error message: The Connection to This Server Has Been Unexpectedly Broken.
The TiBook can Cmd-K connect to the G4 with no problem.
Simple Built-in Ethernet Apple Talk through an AsantŽ hub which has worked for 2 years flawlessly.
No amount of HELP file research comes up with any data, so far as I can tell.
Doesn't 9 talk to X?

I observed this exact same problem on a similar setup today. I have not yet had time to fully troubleshoot / solve the problem, but I did discover this: The "connection broken" message appeared when the protocol the OS 9 Mac was using to connect to the OS X Mac was AppleTalk. When I switched TCP settings on both Macs to form a "dummy" TCP/IP network using 10.0.0.x addresses, then the OS 9 Mac was able to connect OK. So I'm relatively sure the problem has something to do with AppleTalk. Anyone seen this, or have anything to offer?

This is from the deep recesses of my mind somewhere, but I believe filesharing via AppleTalk is NOT supported -- only via TCP/IP. Yes, I know there's an AppleTalk button, but it's for printers and other AppleTalk devices, not sharing.
If it were earlier in the evening and I have a bit more time, I'd go dig in the Apple Knowledge Base, as I'm almost certain that's where I saw this.
It should definitely work IP to IP; I do it all the time between X and X and X and 9.

The gimmick to enable AppleTalk for the AFP server:
In NetInfo Manager, change the /config/AppleFileServer/use_appletalk property from 0 (disabled, the default) to 1 (enabled) and reboot.
PS - I had to do this manually in OSX Server as well, even though there appeared to be a GUI option to set that up.

Craig - That is so neat. Thanks for the lead. Some of us a VERY new to OSX.
