Select song in iTunes, do a Get Info, hit Artwork, hit Delete.

Yes, images in id3 tags use up space. For a standard 300x300 pixel image, figure about 24k. So for every 42 tracks or so, you use 1 megabyte of storage for images.

I too am having this problems with iTunes 7.
Under Get Info, artwork, the "delete" button is gray, meaning I can't click it.
I can't get the album art off. Any suggestions?

Select the artwork before you hit Delete.

For your iPod, just click the "Music" Tab on your iPod's info window, and uncheck "Display Album Artwork on this iPod".

There is no album art to select. However, on my ipod and in the little box on iTunes the album art shows up.

first if you can't see the album arkwork from the mainmenu
click the show item artwork at the very bottom on the left side

what i did was copy another album arkwork or image on top of the arkwork you can't delete

then do as styrafome said *right click-Get Info-hit Artwork- hit Delete
they should be now more then one to delete

If the add and delete button are grey it often means that you do not have sufficient permissions to edit.

For example this happens when you are using a different volume for your iTunes Music that the one where the iTunes app is located.

To resolve, select the volume/drive->File->Get Info-> at the bottom right if the lock is closed , unlock it.

Then check "ignore ownership and permission on this volume"

Go to staff " select "Read and Write"

Reboot your machine.

In iTunes at least, this means the art being displayed has been automatically downloaded by iTunes (i.e. it is not embedded in the file). Only embedded artwork will appear in the Get Info window.

As kel101 says, cmd-clicking and selecting "Clear Downloaded Artwork" should do the trick.

You can also delete the folder ~/Music/iTunes/Album Artwork/Download (where ~ is your home directory). I would've suggested trashing the entire 'Album Artwork' folder but I'm not sure what the 'Local' sub-directory is used for (some kind of cache for the Coverflow maybe?).

It's possible the iPod has a similar set-up, but clearing the artwork in iTunes should stop it displaying on your iPod next time you sync it.

OK I've been trying to erase the artwork on my itunes and my ipod and it's not working! I've tried everything discussed in this thread. I right-clicked and clicked "Clear Album Artwork" and it doesn't clear. I right-clicked and clicked "Get Album Artwork" hoping that the iTunes artwork would override some of the more ugly pictures I had. I also deleted the Download and Cache folders in the Album Artwork folder in my iTunes folder. Someone please help me! None of this worked!

I think you downloaded the art work with the extra feature in itunes and I believe in that case you need to delete the folder in the Music folder that contains the art work. Or you might want to consider getting a tool like cover scout which helps you dealing with the art work. BUt it is not cheap.

The steps you describe will only clear artwork which iTunes has downloaded automatically, it will not clear any artwork which you have embedded in the files themselves.

To do that, simply highlight the tracks whose artwork you want to clear, then get info (Cmd-I on Macs, Ctrl-I on PCs). Assuming that you have multiple tracks selected, select the check-box by the artwork box and hit OK. This will remove any embedded artwork from all the files which you originally highlighted.

If this does not work, then I do not know what your problem is.

Problem:
Some album in your iTunes has some crappy/irrelevant artwork. When you have your iTunes playing in the album art view mode, you can see the unwanted artwork. You select the file, cmd-i, but the info says "No Artwork." Of course, there is artwork, but iTunes does not see it. :(

Solution:

Replace the album art with something you want (or even the right album cover). It won't be right on iTunes but just wait. Close iTunes. Find the Album Art folder. Open it, find the folder that has the corresponding "last modified" date (probabaly "Today, 2 minutes ago.") Delete the super long alphabet soup name. Reopen iTunes. Select file, re add artwork.

Viola.

Hi,

I have a slightly different question. I don't mind keeping the artwork in case someday I want it. But I really dislike having the artwork show up on my iphone. In both the album list and especially the podcast list, the artwork takes up way too much vertical space and horizontal space. I want the view to look like it did on my 5th-gen ipod: a thin amount of text across the full width of the screen, so I can see as much info about each album/podcast as possible and as many albums/podcasts as possible per screen.

Thanks,

Michael
