After upgrading to 10.4.2 I noticed some odd behavior in my Preference Pane. *Some* (as in "not all") of the icons show the generic "System Preference" Icon (with a little indicator to which preference pane is behind that icon)
So far I tried to reinstall 10.4.2 (without success) and checked using Disk Utilities and Preferential Treatment - to no avail.
The Preference Panes work corectly, it is just a cosmetical thing that I want to get rid of. Any ideas ?

Try this:

1. Quit System Preferences

2. In the Finder, open up your user folder, then open Library, then Caches. Drag com.apple.preferencepanes.cache to the trash.

The cache file will be recreated the next time you start System Preferences. Tell us if this clears up your problem.

Trevor,

The answer may have been a long time coming, but dumping the cache file worked.

I'm running 10.4.11 on my MacBook Pro. Don't know what caused the corrupted cache, but a quick Google search for "generic system preference icons" brought me to the right place. Thing is, I might have figured this out by myself, but it would have taken a lot of time and frustration.

Many thanks.
