I just got a laptop for school, and while it isnt the computer I want to use to update and re-arrange my ipod, I was wondering if there is a way to plug it into this laptop to play my songs through the laptop speakers, or even copy songs on my ipod onto my laptop, without having to burn copies of my songs on itunes onto cd's to copy to my computer?

do a search on versiontracker.com for "ipod" this will bring up a selection of applications, like PodWorks which allow you to transfer songs from your ipod onto a computer but first you need to set your ipod to mount onto the desktop as a hard drive through preferences in itunes.
i think you can also play music through your ipod when its plugged into itunes. but im not 100% sure.

You should be able to connect it and view the songs instantly. I think by default, iTunes WON'T start updating your songs with the playlist on the computer automatically - it'll just display them. Make sure that when you connect the iPod you click on the iPod options button in iTunes and set it to update manually. This way you will have directy access to all the songs, and you can even take songs off the iPod using a utility like 'iPod tracks to desktop':

Is this laptop a Mac or a PC?
I'd wait for other's opinions on this issue, as I'm not 100% sure whether what I've just written is accurate, and I certainly don't want to be held responsible if the entire contents of your iPod disappears in a puff of digital smoke ... ;)

To Play songs whilst the iPod is connected to the Laptop:
Prefrences>iPod>Check Manual Manage
To Rip Songs off iPod onto Laptop use iPodRip (http://www.thelittleappfactory.com/software/ipodrip.php)
