everytime that i choose to shut down my computer, I get a message stating that launcher has canceled shutdown. Sometimes 4 or 5 times in a row. shutdown -canceled- click ok, choose shutdown again -canceled, click ok, again and again.
sometimes it will happen just once, other times alot. I havn't been able to pinpoint what is going on. if I try to shut all open applications prior to shutdown, I get the same problems. This happened before the new launcher update that was released about a month ago, and continues to happen after the update.
you might try going to "force quit..." on the apple menu and, well, force-quitting the offending application. that should allow you to logout.

I can log out, it just takes a couple try's. the offending application is the launcher. But... it happened before, and after the update, so that leaves me to think something might need rebuilt or ?? but there is no offending application that i need to force quit.

have you tried restarting the finder instead?

thanks for trying to help, but i'm not looking for a work around.. i'm looking for a fix. This is something that happens everytime i shut my computer off. which, because i have a Yikes g4 400 with original video card, (so the fan runs all the time, there is no real "low power" mode), and the computer is in my bedroom, my comp gets shut off everynight.
I just want to be able to click on my blue apple, choose 'shut down', and have my computer turn off.
can I uninstall launcher, and reinstall it? has anyone else had this problem?

I think I misread your post initially.
Are you by chance referring to the launcher bar in OS9 being accessed through your classic system?
IF SO, here is your solution:
1. reboot from your classic volume (this cures a world of ills on the classic side. Just rebooting classic from within OSX doesn't always replace prefs)
2. under control panels/general controls click OFF "show launcher at startup"
3. restart still in OS9 to make sure prefs are stable.
4. reboot OSX, then find your "launcher items" folder in your OS9 system folder.
5. drag the "launcher items" folder to your OSX dock.
NOW you have access to all your items you enjoyed having access to in OS9, plus its a hierarchial menu as well.
additionally, if you prefer a custom icon, do a get info on the launcher items folder BEFORE you drag it to the dock, find an OSX icon you like from the web or versiontracker, and replace the generic folder icon, then drag onto your dock. (I have the striated multicolor apple as an icon)
If I've misunderstood you, sorry, but if I'm right, using the launcher in classic unnecessarily drags down the classic emulation for something you can use the above steps to eliminate the need for it.

here is a screen snapz of what is going on

this is not associated with running classic at all. (I don't use classic anymore). The problem seems to occur anytime that something is started on my computer. if I launch any application, i get this error message when i try to shut down, or even log out. it never pops up unless I am trying to exit the system. I can't trace it to a single program or event, so i really believe it has something to do with a messed up setting, or com.something.plist? maybe. I'm lost, but this has been going on for months, and I would like it to stop.
thanks for trying to help lerkfish

Had the same problem in 10.1.1. I found that there was a process running called Launcher (use top | grep Launcher in the terminal). I just used kill on it, and the computer shut down just fine. My computer is usually on 24/7, and the next time I restarted my computer was to update to 10.1.2, which fixed the problem for me.
EDIT: I have a g4 AGP 500 mHz.

looking in the process viewer, I see 5 "launchCFMApp" running, each taking up just a little cpu, all under my user name. i don't however see just "launcher" in the process viewer. I also don't see "launcher" listed under the top command in terminal.
