OK, for those who are putting 10.2 on an existing system, can you record experiences here?

Please include details like machine info, whether the install is an upgrade, an archive-clean install, or a wipe the disk and fresh install.

Also things like partitioning, Classic installs and applications and devices.

The idea is to give other upgraders a feel for what to expect; what went easily and what snafu's to expect. Also any shortcuts or workarounds that you found useful, to get your system functioning at more or less the same level or better than before. And how long it takes to do this. If there are specfic problems, you might mention them here and ask in detail in the Help areas.

Does that make sense? Thanks for your time, early adopters.

Installed 10.2 on my G4 - 933. I did an upgrade install over 10.1.5. Everything went smooth. So far no glitches. I am new to the mac world about a month now. Appears to be seamless as far as I can tell, but what do I know. :D

So far I'm very happy with what I've experienced with 10.2

So far, everything is amazingly snappier. One thing broken: canoscan N650U no longer can be found in classic photoshop 5.5 plugin, however, it can be accessed just fine from within OSX using vuescan, which I just downloaded to try.

CONFIGS:
G4/400 Yikes PCI, with newly installed ATI radeon 7000 PCI video card, 1 GIG ram, 3 large drives, non-standard Sony CDrw. This is the lowest end G4 possible.

PROCEDURE:
1. Cloned existing 10.1.5 over to spare 12 gig partition. Inserted OSX install disk 1, and did an update install rather than a clean install. Everything went fine, although install was unbearably long, probably closer to an hour...similar to windows install ...blah.
2. restarted, all settings retained fine, accessed internet, etc. without problem.

OBSERVATIONS:
1. updating the classic partition renders it unusable for the original OSX 10.1.5, so prudence would dictate using a cloned copy of your classic folder.
2. SPEED! weeeeeeedoggies! Now, the question is how much is related to optimizing? Don't know yet, but this is faster than any previous optimizing boost. Mainly explorer and window opening, app opening noticeably faster.
3. Freehand 9 in classic starts INSTANTLY. huge speed gain in classic just in general. So far, haven't checked all classic apps, but they all still work except the previously mentioned canon plug in.
4. Fonts appear to render more clearly. But this could be from the video card upgrade.
5. improvements to calculator is amazing....has advanced feature that shifts to full scientific calculator as well as running a paper tape of computations.
6. Improvements to Mail is good as well, you have separate tabs for the POP server so you can directly manage remotely stored mail...sweet.
7. accounts are now accessible through system prefs.
8. New Cds and DVD prefs pane
9. Default folder, Diobatin and Tinkertool still appear to be functioning.
10. startup disk prefs pane seems improved in both appearance and speed.
11. Address book looks very interesting, haven't played with it yet.
12. Unfortunately, it installs ichat by default, with a suspiciously AIM looking icon. Sure enough, you can use it for AIM. bleh.
13. Epson 740 functions just fine.
14. My internal fujitsu DynaMO 640 works like a charm.
I'll do more testing later....

Installed Jaguar on a Pismo 500 with 768 MB RAM. 256MB RAM from Crucial, 512MB stick from OWC.

Installation: overwrite of already-partitioned drive. Did not install a number of fonts and localized support, so my install was 30 minutes, plus a printer driver install of perhaps 10 minutes. Installation completely uneventful.

First impressions: the "feel" of the Finder is improved. I do everything in column view, and I am not getting the spinning beach ball whenever I access a folder I don't normally access. IE starts faster, and typing here feels "surer", meaning I see less lag between keystrokes than I did in OS X 10.1.5. Major improvement for me. Genie seems smoother -- like the app badge that accompanies minimized screens. Also like the zoom when "opening" the desktop hard drives.

Internet / airport: no hitches. Security Update was also uneventful.

Virtual PC: performance seems unaffected, though screen redraws and I/O operations *might* be better. Will have to check this out on the office machine Monday.

Sherlock: dig it. The yellow pages didn't work well for me, but the movie set up is great. I can see this being a useful tool indeed.

iTunes: noticed live window resizing is "off". Perhaps a control for this...

Preferences: somehow "screen effects" found an old watercolor painting of mine, and the panning around in it is incredible. Maybe 10.1.5 had this, but I'm very impressed.

Classic: seems smooth. No problem running Entourage 2001 with Jag.

Vectorworks has some problems (documented at their site) but there is already a beta 9.5.3 patch.

Font Reserve is broken (haven't even tried it). 3.1 is supposed to be out next week.

Will experiment more tomorrow, but overall I'm moderately happy. If Jaguar addresses my sleep/classic/retrospect freeze issue (or the reinstall does) I'll be happy indeed.

Did a clean install on my Ti-677-rev-2.

Compared to the disappointment associated with 10.1.5, 10.2 is a charm. As others have indicated, Finder is definitely snappier. I believe my TiBk made the QE cut (as evidenced by a small shadow below my cursor) so this also accounts for the increased performance. Using 10.2, even for such a short time, one can see that Aqua is maturing quite nicely. Keep up the good work Apple.

I have, thus far, been able to copy my backed-up Apps without problem. And, so far the most pleasant surprise has to be Mail. Since it can now see a Micro$oft exchange server, I can do away with either Outlook (in classic mode) or Entourage. The porting of my 100s of MB of saved emails in specific locations went flawlessly. Kudos to Apple, one less Redmond App that I have to use. :D

For those who are science geeks, I will be checking out how well Matlab works under 10.2 as compared 10.1.5.

First installed over 10.1.5 - there were some oddities I did not like so I did a clean install. All is well now except for one problem I (nor others have been able to solve). My supposedly supported Epson 777 (drivers are installed by default) refuses to print. And now the Print Center crashes immediately after clicking the "Add Printer". Spent hours attempting all the known fixes - still no luck.

Well, after testing the install 3 times on a blank system Saturday (Thanks RacerX!) I did my B&W Sunday morning.

Since I wanted to repartition my small internal drive, I wound up backing up things and then doing a fresh install. Things went smoother than I expected and didn't wind up having to reinstall many apps (most of which live on the FireWire drive anyway). Fink will be another story, I think.

A few quick things learned:

1) do the Archive-Clean Install if you have the space; that looks like the best of all possible worlds. On the system we tried it looked like a little less than 500MB was sufficient to hold the archive. It didn't look like any 3rd party stuff was touched in the process.

2) don't forget the little 'Customize' button there to turn off the languages and printers; not doing so looked to add about an hour to the install process.

3) If you have User homes areas on a different partition, you still just go into NetInfo after creating the user and relocate the Home directory, and everything works well. Pref panes and things which are not compatible just don't load; there was no system instability caused by their presence.

4) Some applications (Mail and Help Viewer, in particular) can seem to go off into the weeds for long periods of time the first time you run them, rebuilding cache and indexing things. Just let them finish the process. After that they work OK on subsequent launchings. Well, Mail does; Help Viewer still stinks.

5) Only a very few apps required me to hunt down the serial numbers and re-register.

6) So far MouseWorks 2.0, TinkerTool 2.3, and WindowShadeX 2.1 are all working well.

7) The developer documentation is up to a little over 400 MB now, so be careful if you are short of space.

I cahnged my whole strategy this time. I backed up my X partition to a second HDD, formatted the drive, and didn't partition it at all. (I usually have an X parition, a Classic partition, and a scratch/swap partition)

I can't even begin to tell you how smooth it went. It is considerably snappier than the previous versions, and I'm running an older Dual 450MHz AGP system, so I don't believe I get the QE benefit. (Anyone seen the special report on MacFixIt? Who are the idiots an Tenon that claim 10.2 is SLOWER than 10.1.5? 10.2 is running as fast, if not faster, than OS 9 was for me)

I only have two issues at this point that aren't self-inflicted ;) :

Help Center and it's wonderful "Check the internet for updates before rendering" slow as heck problem, and while I do't miss the Happy Mac, personally, that flat grey apple on a white background is, if not ugly, downright boring. They could at elast get rid of the spinning lines and replace it with that beautiful, gorgeous new color wheel! Heh.

Today, I installed 10.2 over an existing 10.1.5 install (backed up home and app folders beforehand) and the only thing that happened on launch was that the OS found an incompatible Keyspan serial-usb kext and asked if I really wanted to use it. I had the updated one handy so of course I said no and then installed the new driver.

That's it. Perfect!

Well, maybe not: now I gotta hope I really get that $50 rebate from Amazon.

Forgot to mention that my made-for-PC internal combo drive also worked without a hitch!
