View Full Version : Syncing iPod to iTunes (Not the other way)

Apoligies if there are many threads out there like this one, but I couldn't find much when I ran a search. Anyways, I just recovered from my first real hard drive failure/replacement (myself!), and I have almost everything back to my new drive (using the hard way of dragging all my files instead of using a disk image or something... probably not the right choice) except some of my iTunes:

I copied all of my songs (from the iTunes Music Library folder) to an external drive about 2 weeks before it finally died. But during those 2 weeks, I added about another 100 songs to iTunes. When my drive died, my iPod was entirely up to date, but my external drive wasn't -- it didn't have those additional songs (which I had also put in some playlists).

My iPod is set to update automatically, so I haven't plugged it into my computer, afraid of losing those songs (which would not be easy to get back/re-import either, in case you were wondering) when iTunes syncs to it.

So I suppose my first question is: How can I plug my iPod into my computer without it automatically updating (which it is set to do)? Secondly, how would I transfer songs from my iPod back to iTunes/do you have any recommendations for a good program that does so?

The ideal situation would to have a syncing program that syncs the iPod to iTunes (and thus would add those missing 100 songs to iTunes), rather than the other way around.

Thanks

umm...I think just plugging the pod in and force quiting iTunes before it opens will do the trick (option click the dock icon while it's bouncing..) for apps, I use PodWorks but I'm sure there are plenty of other ones...a quick search on versiontracker will do it, or even on the MacOsXHints listing for unix commands to do iPod->iTunes

Well, thanks for the replies. I connected my iPod and immediately Force-Quitted iTunes. Then I opened PodWorks, but when I clicked "Send to iTunes" for the very first song, iTunes launched and my 114 songs were erased before I even knew what happened...

At least I got screenshots of the songs I was missing. I'll just have to re-download 50+ songs (legally of course -- they're not by a professional artist), re-borrow a CD (hehe), and re-import a couple, so I guess it's not a real big deal. Thank goodness it wasn't my entire Library though.
