My 60GB iPod Photo is skipping the ending of songs which from what I've read may indicate that the hard drive is starting to fail.

Is there any diagnostic software available that I can run on the iPod hard drive?

I'd like to see if there are any bad sectors, and if so, I would like to mark them as bad and continue using the rest of the drive like any other drive. It seems silly to replace the hard drive it's just developed a bad sector.

You can use Disk Utility to verify/repair the disk.

What do I have to do to get it to appear? It doesn't show up when I launch Disk Utility.

Hmm... something else odd I just noticed. It comes up in iTunes just fine, but it's not showing up in my desktop. Maybe that's why it's not appearing in Disk Utility?

Okay, I think I found the problem. I ended up having to put it in disk mode and restoring it. As soon as I opened iPod Updater, it mounted on my desktop and Disk Utility could see it. It showed that it indeed had errors. I just ran restore, and now Disk Utility cannot find any errors. Perhaps restore has a built-in disk utility of some sort?

It's loading all the music again so I'll double check it after everything is reloaded, but I think it should be in good shape now.

Here are the Apple docs I used in case it's of help to anyone else:

When you ran "restore" it reformatted the drive, so the were no longer any errors for Disk Utility to fix.
