I just got an ipod nano, and from what I understand, in iTunes if you uncheck a song it is not supposed to update the unchecked songs when you plug in the ipod.

This does not seem to be working. When I plug in my ipod, all the songs in iTunes, even the ones I have unchecked, are being transferred to my ipod.

I got about 1,000 songs from my dad, and I have not had a chance to listen to some of them. I don't want to delete them yet, but I don't want them to update on my ipod because I want to make room for my own songs.

Does anyone have any advice?

Have you checked the “Only update checked songs” checkbox under iPod preferences?

I have an MP3 file (Books and Spoken Word category) that I imported (File > Add to Library...) but it still doesn't synch onto my iPod. I see it in my iTunes library and have it checked per the advice above. I also have "Only update checked songs" checked in my iPod Music Preferences panel. Do you know why this file might not be loading onto my iPod?

Thanks!

The problem could be two things:
1) The iPod has not updated yet since adding the file to iTunes. Go to File>Update iPod.
2) If you have automatic updating enabled, iTunes will only copy the songs that there are room for on the iPod. You mght have run out of space on the iPod. I would switch to "Manually manage songs and playlists," then you can just drag whichever songs you like over to the iPod.
Hope this helps!
