Mounting iPod as external drive

Whenever I connect my ipod to the firewire port I briefly see the ipod icon in the finder window but by the time itunes has finished its up-dating process the ipod icon disappears from the finder.

Some time ago I copied some data to the ipod and I would now like to copy it back to my hard drive but it keeps disappearing, how can I permanently mount the ipod?
