Does anybody know if the USB power adapter only charges the iPod or it allows it to run off the mains (therfore not using the battery)?

Many thanks

It does. Or, to be more accurate, I can watch mine plugged in for an hour and it does not appear to drain the battery.

Thanks.
I am planning to buy an ipod video but as battery replacement (by the way I couldn't find any info about ipod video battery on the Alle site) is quite expensive it would make sense to save battery life while in the car or playing a slideshow on the TV running the ipod off the mains/charger.

Here's a good hint (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030314081843218) about Lithium Ion batteries in general, like the Lithium Ion battery used in the iPod. And here's a good FAQ (http://www.ipodbatteryfaq.com/) specifically about iPod batteries.

Interesting links Trevor. There is not much about the batteries of the 5g ipods as they are probably too new. It might be a little bit more difficult to change the battery on the video ipods according to this Arstechica article.http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/video-ipod.ars/6
