I got my ipod mini from my brother recently and had to buy a new chord for it (dock connector to usb 2.0) and I was wondering if I *NEED* Itunes to get songs on it and get songs OFF of it....and what do I do when it says Do Not Disconnect?

itunes will copy songs to an iPod, and delete them, but will not copy songs from an iPod to a computer, it is also the only transfer application that apple supports (if you don't use iTunes, and it doesn't work, they'll tell you to use iTunes)
Do not disconnect means that the iPod has detected that it is connected to a computer, and the drive inside is capable of being accessed by the computer. Essentially, it means that your computer could be changing what's on the iPod, and don't just unplug it. In iTunes, there will normally be an eject button next to the iPod, clicking that should make the do not disconnect go away, and make it safe to unplug the iPod.

A small amount of common sense can be applied to the "Do not disconnect" notice. If you are not doing anything to the iPod (charging doesn't count) then pulling the plug will do no harm.

Well, I'd figure only when I was doing something it would say that.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? It says "Do not Disconnect" when there is an active connection, wether or not a data transfer is in progress. As long as nothing is being transferred pulling the plug won't do anything.
