Hey. I have the 30Gb iPod, and here's my dilemma: I would like to put all my music on the iPod, and delete it from my hard drive to free up space.
I've already set it up so that iTunes does not automatically update when I plug in my iPod; however, I would like to know whether my music would disappear from my iPod if I were to delete the mp3 files from the computer's hard drive (but not the iTunes list), and re-enable automatic updates.
Any help would be appreciated. :)

Deleting files from your hard drive and attempting to sync iPod with iTunes, will delete the music ffrom your iPod. If you add new music to iTunes, it will replace the music on your iPod on the next sync.

even if I do not delete the song title from my listing in iTunes? (the names with the exclamation points beside them)

If you have your iPod set to manually sync (which it sounds like you do), then deleting tracks from your iTunes library will NOT delete the songs from your iPod.

But, if you ever re-enable automatic synching, you can kiss those deleted songs goodbye.

ok thanks. that's what i needed to know.
grrr...there has got to be an easier way. i need to erase everything from my computer and use the restore disc (it has a whole litany of issues).

i was hoping i could put everything on my iPod; do the system restore; and then ptu ti all back, but i'm having trouble figuring out a way.

Sorry, I didn't catch what your ultimate goal was.

You can copy all your songs to your iPod and use something like Senuti to get them off the iPod after you wipe your drive. (There are TONS of apps like Senuti, so if that one doesn't seem right, there are plenty more where that came from.)

So once your files are back on your machine, and all your playlists have been restored, you can re-enable automatic synching. Just make sure you run Senuti before iTunes (or make sure you cancel iTunes' initial dialog about auto-synching your iPod).
