I have an original 5GB iPod which has served me well. I replaced the battery in it about a year and a half ago and have been getting upwards of 10 hours of playing time.
We're off to Bangkok by bus tomorrow and when I pulled out the iPod to charge it nothing happened. Completely dead. I tried the reset sequence and still nothing happened. I tried connecting it to both power source and to computer. No joy.
So, I cracked the case, removed the battery and, with the battery still unplugged, connected it to the charger.
Hooray! iPod sprang back to life and now seems to be working fine again.
(Don't worry about my having only 5GB of space for tunes. I tend to listen to the same ten songs over and over again so a Shuffle is probably all I really need.)
