I just want to let others know what can happen if and when they use the iPod updater (not the iTunes update).

Last Saturday I had used my iPod w/video all day and the battery was depleted. Got home and hooked it up to my desktop (700 MHz PowerPC G4) and everything was going swimmingly. The iPod icon appeared as usual on the desktop. iTunes opened as usual. iSync kicked in and did its' thing as usual.

And then the iPod updater came onscreen. And that's when things went downhill fast. I read it over and since I had the time I clicked on update for my 5th generation iPod w/video (60GB). WHAM!!!!! The iPod icon went from one side of the desktop to the other and then it disappeared! The screen on the iPod went blank and I could feel things whirring around inside of it. And then nothing....& I mean nothing.

I tried all of the troubleshooting recommended by Apple on their iPod support page.....2 to 3 times each and nothing worked. The iPod was no longer mounting to the desktop...and I even tried hooking it up to my iBook but no-go there either. The only thing I would get when pushing any of the buttons on the click wheel was an anemic beeping and maybe the screen would light up white and then shut off. My 60GB iPod w/video was now nothing more than an expensive paperweight/nightlight after the "update".

So I called Apple Care Tuesday morning and told them exactly what I have reported here. They promptly sent out their packaging via DHL & my 1 month 3 day old iPod is on its' way to a repair facility. But I don't think that a repair will quite cut it. I believe that it will have to be replaced. And all of this because of the iPod updater.

I also own a Nano but I will NOT update it when it comes time for a recharge. And I recommend that those reading this think twice before using the updater too.

I'm not knocking Apple or iPods in any way. I love them both but just take care when updating. My situation may be unique. I hope so but if there is anyone else out there who had a similiar problem I'd sure like to hear about it.

Updater 1.1 gave me grief on a 5G video as well. Reset and restore to 1.0 and all is well.

Remember the Star Trek Movie rule of software updates? The even-numbered ones are best.

If it would mount to the desktop....ANY desktop...that would be an option but it wouldn't, couldn't, didn't.

It is now winging its' way to the repair facility as I type this.

But thanks for the tip.

Wow, that is a scary story. I look at it this way, if it's not broken don't fix it. I read about that version and I will not attempt to use it. I hope your Ipod gets fixed.

By the way this is my first post in this forum and I just want to say hey. HEY!:)

I read a lot of warnings about the update (mainly to do with the video playback), but Apple hasn't pulled the updater, so I tried it anyway.
Well... I don't see any difference, to be honest. The two movie trailers (King Kong) still work. It still plays music.

Then again, I only sync it with iTunes, not with iSync.

The reason I upgraded is: I hoped the battery life would be better afterwards. For my 60 GB 5gen iPod it's only about 3 hours. Yes, the backlight is always off. I guess the battery is not so good, but I don't feel like returning it to Apple. I never carry it around, I used it for my home stereo.
