View Full Version : Search needs 'and' not 'or'

It appears that search by keyword is an 'or' search. In other words, if I have two keywords I get many more items than with one key word. Is there a way to get the search to use 'and'? (If I put 'and' in the string it seems to find almost everything because and matches ;-)
In other words: I put apple, I get 269 results. I put 'apple powerbook' and I get over 600 hits. It does not seem to matter if I select boolean or natural language.
Anyway, maybe I do not know how to do it. If that is the problem, maybe there needs to be an easy to find search help.
Thanks for listening.

Are you talking about searching on the forums? Are you using the "advanced" search page?
If so, note the choice between "Boolean" and "Natural Language" near the bottom. The former allows you to use AND & OR

Is it true boolean with support for nested parenthetical terms and quotation marks and NOT and so forth?
-----
((MacOS or "Mac OS") or Macintosh) and ("sw" or "software") and NOT ("Microsoft" or "Adobe")

I'm not at all sure. Rob might know.
Or you could do some experiments to find out.

I agree with aubrey.
Making "and" instead of "or" the default is what most intuitively expect, it would make me use the quick search function again instead of doing a

google search instead.

Anything new ?

I second that (third?) -- and appreciate the explanation of why my Forum search attempts often disappointingly many (irrelevant) results. The Search function could be greatly improved as suggested.
Thanks.
