I'm running OSX10.2 on a G4 w/dual 450s. I'm networked at home using an 8-port Linksys Router for internet access. What happens is when I plug a URL into IE 5.2.1 the browser hangs. Sometimes I never connect to the website. It happens to all websites not just a few.

I also have problems sending and receiving email using Jaguars mail client. Quite often it will not connect to the mail server... then if it does, it tells me that my authorization was not accepted.

If I reboot in OS9.2, I have no problems at all. Everything works just peachy.

I've tried various network settings (DHCP, Manual, Apple Talk On, Apple Talk Off, etc.). I've even replaced my CAT 5 cables just for the heck of it... all to no avail. I've also turned off Quartz.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have experienced a similar problem, and maybe since you are using routing this could help you too. Read this knowledge base-document (http://kbase.info.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/kbase.woa/wa/query?searchMode=Assisted&type=id&val=KC.107010) from apple. It worked for me, although apple says it only affects users in Japan.

Because the fix suggested has to be repeated every time you reboot 10.2, my suggestion is to have a startupitem for it. My (temporary) solution is to add the lines "ifconfig en0 mtu 1454" an "ifconfig en1 mtu 1454" to the BroadbandOptimizer startup item until someone makes a startupitem to fix this.

Hey Kirkus, small question: do you use the builtin firewall of OSX?

I've been having problems with DNS resolves under Jaguar; the problems occur randomly, and seem to be related to the firewall: if I flush all rules, it works again.

Even more weird, if I reinstate all my rules again, it keeps working. Very weird...

Thanks for the replies!

oeholmen: I'll certainly try what you've suggested. I'll have to dig a little to learn how to add a startupitem (I know as much about UNIX as Windows knows about user interfaces). But I like getting my hands dirty. I really appreciate the tip.

patashnik I've tried it with the Firewall on and off... and with different rules. I've left it off now and depend on my router to keep me safe from the outside world.

The first Mac I ever used was an old SE30 and I've been a Mac guy (at home anyway) eversince. What really bites is that I know OS8.x and OS9.x better than I know my own children. I'm the guy people call when they're having trouble. But with OSX I'm totally in the dark.

Thanks again for suggestions, I'll let you know how it goes.

You should try to connect your machine directly to the modem to se if it is a routingproblem. Otherwise try BroadbandOptimizer on VersionTracker (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=12591&db=mac). This installs a StartupItem in "/Library/StartupItems". Use the terminal to edit "sudo emacs /Library/StartupItems/BroadbandOptimizer/BroadbandOptimizer" and add the two lines at the end. Press ctrl-x ctrl-c to quit emacs and type "y" to save changes. Hope it works!

First of all, let me say thanks to you both for taking the time to try and help me out.

I did everything suggested (and a few things that weren't... including reinstalling Jaguar) and nothing seemed to help. Then I remembered an incident not long ago with my ISP. I have a wireless internet connection and at one point my access was sporatic at best. I called my ISP and within a few moments the problem was fixed. So I got to thinkin' maybe I was having the same problem now (I had my doubts because OS9.2 seemed to be fine). Anyway, My ISP was closed today for a national holiday, so I sent an email and left a message with tech support. I turned off my computer and stopped fiddlling with stuff.

Now, quite a few hours later, everything seems to be running smoothly, I'm embarassed to say. I truly appreciate your help (I learned a few new things about OSX) and hope it might help someone out in the future.

Again, thank you.
