If you used Fink, then you use:
%sudo dselect
And find mysql in option (2), press (-) and hit enter, after that chose option (3) to install/uninstall selected packages.

If not, find where mysql was installed and delete it there + all mysql commands fro bin folders (This would take you some time, and it would not be fun, for your sake I hope you used fink.).

I did not use fink so I guess I have to do the manual method.

Thanks

not really a question for newcomers....but anyway...

you shall have to give more info

what kind of install have you done?
source compile? or binary?

which path did you install to?

etc etc

I am having troubles too. I installed the package from http://www.entropy.ch/software/MacOSx/mysql/ which uses the binary format. It installed to /usr/local/mysql. I must have done something wrong because I can not log into MySQL as root, and I dont think I ever did. I basically understand what is going on in the steps given at the URL I downloaded from except for the last one.
After sudo ./bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql & (that starts mysql under the user mysql and puts it in the background right?) the next step simply says "Use it with mysql test". What the hell is that? After 7 completely clear and specific steps, the 8th and final one is completely vague!
It then goes on to say you should do "mysqladmin -u root password new_password" which is different from the format I have seen elsewhere I think. Nonetheless, I am unable to log in to MySQL as root, meaning all I can do is play with the 'test' db.
I would just like to know how to reset the password, or uninstall MySQL altogether, or whatever I have to do to gain full access.

ANY help will be GREATLY appreciated, but please be as specific as possible. Unix is not my bag, baby.

Thank you,

To reset everything about mysql, including the root password, use the install_db script (mysql_install_db)

mysqladmin -u root password new_password

Is basically

mysqladmin -u root password 'your_pass_here'

to set the root password, otherwise you can login as root without entering any pass i.e.

mysql -u root

Hope this helps.

I tried that, but get an error in Terminal:
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

It does not seem to matter what I use for my password. I know what I originally entered when setting up MySQL, but nothing works now.

I am running 10.5.1 server in advances mode on a dual 1GHz G4, MAMP, MySQL tools, stock otherwise. I reinstalled OS X for this Mac to run as a webserver.

You neglected to mention a lot of really important things. Version of MySQL being one of them.

The most important part of that error is the very first line

mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed

Your mysqladmin is not connecting to the server. Is it running?

Fix that problem, then if the proble continues read Causes of access denied errors (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/access-denied.html) or how to reset the root password (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/resetting-permissions.html)

MySQL has just terrific documentation. I'd encourage you to read through that rather than digging up a topic many years old about a server version that's well out of date and probably doesn't apply to you.

And did you happen to notice that 6 years passed between the "To reset everything" past and the "Tried that..." reply? Several new software versions have come and gone since 2002 and it is somewhat unlikely that the original advice is less than valid now (although the common causes of mysql login failures haven't changed much).

Thanks for the advice navaho. I am new to SQL and php, but this gives me a very appreciated direction to go.

I'm also suffering....

Intel Mac Mini... I tried Tenon iTools (which has been deleted). But now when I try to re-install mysql - either 4 or 5 - it tells me:

Errors in installing software
Please try installing again

When installing it says that it is upgrading, but I have manually deleted mysql from /usr/local/ and /Library/Receipts.

Please help!

Are you on Leopard? Because that is an invalid argument on Leopard. The user on Leopard is _mysql. Are you using a 10.5 installer on 10.4 or a 10.4 installer on 10.5?

I managed to fix the error.

For some reason, the install pkg could not add the user mysql to the system (tried both the pkg and manual install).

So I added mysql user in netinfo, and then re-installed mysql.

All works ok.

If anyone can post an update for the reasons for this on 10.4 I'm sure that would help other users with this problem.
