So lemme see if I got this straight.

For a mere $120 and change, give or take (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4254) I can buy 10.2 and put it on my machine, thus giving me the latest and greatest.

Of course, on my QE-ignorant WallStreet I may not notice much much video acceleration (http://forums.macosxhints.com/poll.php?s=&action=showresults&pollid=46);

I might experience slower application launching (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5435);

I may lose versatility and control over FTP (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5107);

I may have problems mounting windows PC shares (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5079), (2nd cite) (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4995) ;

I may find that some Unix utilities I've installed don't work from the command line (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5390) without modifications; also
sendmail may break (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5100); Fink will require a bit of tweaking (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5406); and I'm not sure about whether or not I'll have to recompile and reinstall some of my X-Windows apps? I'll need to install new Developer tools before I can compile (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5252) anything new, a separate install not included as part of the Jaguar install;

Looks like I'll still need DAVE (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4958) ;

I may have problems with Toast and OS-level CD burning (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4905) ;

FileMaker Pro also seems to have some display issues with MacOS X (sorry, no URL. Anyone need a cite, ask me and I'll dig one up).

It appears that some people are only happy with 10.2 if they do a clean install (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4764&highlight=Jaguar+and+clean+install) (2nd link) (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4576), after which you'd enter all your settings and reinstall any apps that do anything more complicated than stick some files in the Applications or Users folder.

Many of my little tweaking programs such as the Duality theme, FruitMenu, WindowShade X, X-Assist, etc., will either quit working or will require downloading a Jaguar-compatible version or patch.

All right, obviously this is a worst-case scenario--I might have none of these problems and I'm not at all likely to have to deal with all of them. Still, that's a pretty formidable mess of incompatibilities and issues, and it's not like the above constitutes the definitive unabridged list or anything. It's more imposing than going from System 7 to MacOS 8 was, and far more than going from 8 to 9. It's even quite a bit more than moving from System 6 to 7, in fact. Only the gap between MacOS 9 and MacOS X looms larger.

So...I may eventually bite the bullet and upgrade to Jaguar. Or I may wait for a later cat. Either way, I sure hope Apple smooths out the upgrade path between versions in future releases. I'd like to move between decimal-point upgrades, at least, as easily as upgrading from MacOS 9.0 to 9.1 from now on. Pop in the CD, click the "Install" button without a second thought, and find everything in complete working order when it's done.

Hey Apple! Don't forget this is supposed to be a Mac operating system...
