See for example the url link in my 05-30-2006 11:36 AM message at
this thread (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=56286)
Why is the link pushed to a new line (I know, "because there's a <br> inserted before it", but why). I would presume that the goal is to have long URLs start on a new line so that they are less likely to cause the message box to be excessively wide given that a URL can't be broken into multiple lines. However, the URL itself isn't being displayed--just the text label, which can be wrapped during layout.

It would seem that you inserted a newline (i.e. typed Return) just before the URL.
I did an "Edit" of your message to get the source text. I paste it below as a demonstration. Here's your message pasted as is:
Regarding buildlock errors, they are almost always easily solvable by you once you pay close attention to the actual error message and search the fink mailing lists. Here's a
guide to fink buildlocks (http://wiki.opendarwin.org/index.php/Fink:buildlocks) that includes a troubleshooting section:
Here's the same message after I delete the extra newline:

I'm assuming that you typed in the URL tag yourself. If you used one of the auto-methods to get the URL tags, then I guess the problem is with that auto-method.

Nope, I didn't place any extra linebreaks before the URL link (http://http://wiki.opendarwin.org/index.php/Fink:buildlocks) (which I here used the "insert link" button (globe+chain icon) but even if I entry the URL link (http://http://wiki.opendarwin.org/index.php/Fink:buildlocks) manually it's the same.
Edit: of course this time it didn't do it. *grr*
