Hi.
I have a program that records radio off the net. Previously I have just made rather large aiff files. I want to convert an aiff file to aac for an ipod nano.
I discovered that itunes does this, but when I converted my aiff file the music sounded like it was an old vinyl record playing at the wrong speed - very slowly.
I have checked that the original aiff file was okay.
Thanks for any help.

What is the name of the program that you use to record radio off the net? What version?
Exactly how did you check that the original aiff file was good?

It is Audio Hijack 2.2.5 but I updated that only today.
I played the original aiff in itunes.

Playing at half speed can indicate a couple of different things, but when dealing with digital audio, they all have to do with sample rates.
So that means that somewhere along the way, there is an incorrect sample rate setting, or the program belives that the sample rate is different than it is, or some other sample rate snafu.
I'd recommend that you try changing Audio Hijack's sample rate setting. If it's currently set to Auto, try setting it to various values. If it's currently set to a specific sample rate, try some other sample rates.
Also, according to the Rogue Amoeba web page, Audio Hijack will automatically encode to AAC with iTunes. Are you using the option in Audio Hijack, or are you doing it manually?

I tried to convert the aiff file using itunes. Is that doing it manually? I will try your suggestion on varying the sample rate.
I have to say though, I have had other audio problems recently ever since I downloaded and tried out Amadeus, the sound editing software.
I can't get any sound out of Real Player, although with radio it is obviously streaming ok. Also some websites' audio no longer produces any sound, and not just the ones that use real player. Quicktime is ok though.
This is proving a real pain because I use audio off the net a lot in learning a foreign language. Fortunately podcasts are still working as is my music playing in itunes.
Also my first ever (brief) try-out of skype produced error messages on skype's own test.

I changed the sample rate from Auto to 44.100kHz and set it to automatically encode to aac. It has worked just fine. I can now make my niece some files for her sad, empty ipod.
Thanks very much for your help.
