hi everybody. hopefully how i describe my situation helps you guys resolve my problem (if possible). sorry it's long, but help is appreciated.

well anyways, like last month or so i did something bad. i had to leave class but my ipod was plugged in to a school computer, and i tried safely ejecting it and it wouldn't eject. well i unplugged it unsafely and i had that "not safely ejected" warning on the screen. my 4g 40 gb ipod had the apple logo... stuck on its screen. i reset the ipod and when it loaded, all of my songs and playlists were gone. but when i went to "about" it had about 13 gb's being used, and this 13 gb's was my music/files i had on my ipod, meaning the files were still there. i ended up losing both my firewire and usb cables at school so i didn't do anything about fixing my ipod till last week when i bought a usb cable. i plugged my ipod in to the computer, the ipod loaded on the computer screen, and i restored the software on it. did the load itunes and rename ipod thing, then i tried uploading songs. after 5 songs uploaded, itunes froze. when i force quit itunes, itunes was still open. i guess this was because itunes would load when my ipod was connected. so i tried ejecting my ipod safely. wouldn't eject and lagged my computer with the color wheel spinning forever. then i tried disk utility and that lagged my computer like crazy, and still didn't eject my ipod. then i relaunched finder (still leaving the ipod connected) and i ended up not having that... bar on the top with file and edit and stuff. but i could still access force quit, and itunes was still open. once i eject my ipod, things go back to normal. so i have no idea what is wrong with my ipod. the ipod screen is frozen while it's connected. the do not disconnect circle isn't blinking. it's so... screwed up. help please?

It sounds like your iPod has some corrupted data. I would try quitting iTunes ASAP and aborting the update. Then use Disk Utility to erase and zero out the data on the drive. If the drive's beyond repair, this will fail (bad blocks). Once it's done, run the updater again and Restore the iPod. It should work normally when you're done.
