I am planning to buy a used generation 4 iPod - what problems should I be aware of?

There is no specific 4th gerneration bugs or defects to look for. It is, however, a machine and theerfore subject to mechanical wear. This is even more true for it's moving parts.

Generic iPod check list Monitor - Does it work correctly?
Click Wheel - Does it function correctly?
Harddrive - Does it make any noticable noise or chunky vibrations?
Headphone Jack - Does it play songs via the headphones?
Software - Does it access the iPod software menu ok?

You'll want to use the iPod Software Updater in /Applications/Folder to wipe the HDD and restore it to factory settings.

the main thing people i've known use the extended warranty for is if the battery goes dead. My battery on my 3rd gen. became virtually unusable over a year ago and i replaced it for less than $30 from http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6943&Item=NWTIPOD8503 (that URL is for the 3rd gen battery) it was a bit nerve-racking removing the hard-drive but it was fine besides for that.

basically it comes down to doing a battery replacement yourself or paying more for apple care that will do the battery for you and also cover total death. I'm not sure how 4th gens are holding up at this point
