do have any other files on the iPod that could be taking up space? What format are the songs in? when connected to the computer, on iTunes, does it say it has any free space?

You most likely used 'Apple Lossless' or 'AIFF' to import, or other things are on your iPod.

In iTunes, go to the 'Preferences' (edit menu on Windows, iTunes menu on Mac) and click Advanced, and in that, click Importing. What does it say in the first menu?

Check how much space these same songs are taking up on your Mac.
(Go into your Music folder and use the "Get Info" menu item from Finder's "File" menu.)

If they are taking up significantly less space on your Mac than the capacity of your iPod (2 GB), then you should try the standard Apple suggestions for iPod problems (the r's), including resetting your iPod and then re-syncing it with your Mac to get the songs back.
