I've had a 3g 20gb for over 3 years, its still very fast to mount and be ready for use, less than 10 seconds after I plug it in, even after all that time.

I have a 2 month old 5g 60gb video and it takes forever to mount on my PC or my Mac. I am primarily using it on my Mac. I plug it in, and it can take up to 2 minutes for the icon to show up in finder and in itunes. Sometimes it doesnt show up at all. Every time i plug it in, it goes IMMEDIATELY to do not disconnect, so I know its getting plugged in all the way and all that.

Just wondering if anyone experienced similar things and if so if there is any fix. I have the latest firmware (i was hoping that would help, but it didn't).

Are there are any relevant console messages?

Here's what I think...You said you use it on both mac and pc - so it's formatted FAT. For reference, I have a powerbook as my main computer. I had a 4th gen 40GB that I formatted FAT so I had the option to use the drive on pc's from time to time. After using it nearly always on the mac formatted FAT it REALLY started to give me trouble; not mounting; only mounting in disk utility, but not on the desktop; only mounting, but not showing up in iTunes. Then started to get the 'sad mac'. I took it into the Apple store and what do you know? It worked. I mentioned the 'sad mac' and he strait away gave me a 5th gen 60BG (but this was my 3rd time having problems). So after about 4 months of spectacular performance on my HFS formatted iPod, I thought, well, I'd like to use it on a pc, so let's reformat it on widows. Immediately I started having the same non-mounting problems, and if it DID sync with my iTunes it would always come up with "disk error: this disk cannot be written to." Same as before.

To sum up: I think the mac takes issue with an iPod formatted for the pc.

Does any one concur?
