Hello,

I am trying to digitize old audio tapes to download to my iPod. I have all the necessary equipment and software, and have, in fact, already started a couple of tapes. My question now is, how do I take the AIFF files (I am recording via Garageband) and convert them into a more compressed format (should I use AAC or MP3?). The recordings are old college lecture tapes of my father which I would like to preserve if possible into CDs and some in my iPod. That being said, most are 60~90 minute recordings, therefore, 700MB or so in the original AIFF format...

Please let me know if there is any way to compress these files. Sound quality is not much of an issue for me as long as it is still "hearable."

Thank you.

Set iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > Importing to the compressed audio quality level you prefer. Drag the AIFF files onto your iTunes window. Select the AIFFs in your iTunes Library. Go to the Advanced pulldown menu and select "Convert Selection to MP3" (or a similar entry, depending on your settings).

Thanks, I'll give that a try. Along the lines of format, which is AAC the preferred format in terms of most compressed audio format for iPods/CDs?

Thank you.

if i'm understanding you right, you're asking which is the more common format? MP3 is more common and can be played on more players, but AAC has slightly better quality and smaller file space

Thanks for the reply. That is what I wanted to know.

Note that speech compresses a lot better than music and needs much less bandwidth.

You can get away with mono, 22,050 kHz and kbps values in the low two-digits for mp3 which will result in very small files and no perceivable loss of quality.
