Hi,

Does anybody have a list of what is/is not necessary to run Classic, so that we can disable every unneeded extension and speed up Classic Startup

It will start up with Extensions off, which you can set in your Classic preferences. Can't get too much more streamlined than that!

My suggestion is to keep only those control panels and extensions that you know you'll need and disable the rest.

You can try these to see how they work for you - the usual disclaimers apply:

Control panels you can do without are: Powerbook SCSI Disk Mode, Web Sharing, Infrared, Password Security, File Sharing, TCP/IP, Modem, Startup Disk, Location Manager, Trackpad, Remote Access, Monitors, Mouse, Energy Saver, and Software Update.

You should be able to turn off the DVD stuff.

Any Networking and Multi-User features can be disabled if you don't connect to anything else through Classic, so these can be turned off:

AppleTalk, Keychain Access, Apple Enet, Apple Enet DLPI Support, EnetShimLib, File Sharing Extension and Library, OpenTpt Remote Access, SLPPlugin and Network Setup Extension, AirPort stuff, IrDA Tool and Lib, and AppleShare.

If you don't use Classic for the Internet, you can disable:

Internet, Apple Modem Tool, any Modem extensions, NBP Plugin, Remote Only, Software Update extensions, DialAssist, Location Manager Extension, LDAP Extensions.

If you are not going to play any games in Classic, you can turn off anything with ATI, NVIDIA, OpenGL and QuickDraw 3D in their names.

These should be regarded as starting points, and I would recommend making a duplicate Extension set in the Extension Manager so you can turn the other set back on when you boot into OS 9.

If you lose functionality for anything you use in Classic, you can of course turn the appropriate Control Panel or Extensions back on.

I hope this information helps. I have my configured accordingly, and my Classic startup time is about 30 seconds from start to finish.
