You must use USB to transfer music and pictures to the nano.
You can connect through FireWire to charge the nano's battery, but that's it.

That was one of the big trade-offs with the Nano. To get it that small they had to remove the chipset and support for Firewire. It's USB only.

I'm afraid the excuse for leaving out FW support from the 5th generation full-size iPod is, depending on the point of view, either to make it cheaper or to make more profit...

Yes, but it seems to me as though Apple is trying to wash their hands of Firewire altogether. Look at the new lineup of Macbook Pros compared to the last release of PowerBooks. Support is waning. I guess they are looking to drop it altogether in the future and just have USB 1,2, and later 3.

shishcabob30 – Also note that your sister's Nano doesn't have an accessory port next to the headphone jack. Does she know that you swiped borrowed it?

The only reason they've dropped the FW800 is to get the Macbook Pro thinner, and also because its only the high end professionals with HD's and lots of data to transfer that need it.

My understanding is that the expresscard slot speed is faster than that of firewire 800, so as soon as someone produces an expresscard with a firewire 800 port on it, then they will be happy again, until then they will have to just use FW400, which is still faster than USB 2.0 (in real world tests.)

And I seriously hope that apple don't just go with USB 2.0 over firewire, firewire is just faster for large data transfers.

Well the Macbook Pro does have Firewire 800 but its only the 17" that does
" according the Apple store thingy"
"One FireWire 400, one FireWire 800, and three USB 2.0 ports"

Lyndonl: You have sharp eyes, I hadn't noticed that. Previous post updated accordingly :) Previous post is too old to edit, so just take all the macbook pro bits about it not having FW 800 to be the MacBook Pro 15" Model(s) and the MacBook Pro 17" Model(s) do have FW 800.

Oh and ThreeBKK, if apple are "trying to wash their hands of Firewire altogether", then why does the Mac Pro have an extra FW 800 port on the front, in addition to the FW 400 port that was already there, plus all the FW ports on the back… ;)
