PC formatted iPod on Mac OSX

Why won't my PC formatted iPod be read by Mac OS X?

It wants me to update my software, but I can't because it wants me to reformat my iPod to Mac, and that's not doable becuase of the 25gigs of songs on it already.

And it won't read it in iTunes so I can't play it from my computer...

Help anyone?

A PC formatted iPod should be readable as OS X can read Windows FAT32.
