if you don't know the answer... just say so...
frustrated with lack of anything constructive... i turn to a mod for help...
why b/c i need help... and (i think) that's what this forum is for...
so i ask the mod... if he has any experience setting up tiger as a dns server...
why do i ask him?.. b/c i'm getting the usual "why do you want to do that" crap from people trying to raise their post count - who probably have no clue on how to setup tiger as a dns server...
so what does the mod tell me?... to post my question in the forum...
grrrreat... (i already did)
he wouldn't even tell me if he was familiar with the process... zero... zip... nada... just a reply "Please ask these sorts of questions on the forums."
15k posts... hmmm...

this site has a lot of potential... but much of it is kind/nice/polite postwhoring...
too much... for a technical board...
never understood folks who don't know the answer question, yet feel compelled to sidetrack things...
just my 2c
p.s. when i DO find out the steps necessary for running Tiger as a DNS for your domain(s) - i will post it... so the next person who wants to do that will have the information they need - sitting there... no questions asked...

Moderators moderate; forum users ask (and answer) questions. That would be why the moderator suggested that you ask the question in one of the forum areas, I think.
For myself, I'd suggest reading up on BIND and consulting Chapter 3 of this document:
http://images.apple.com/server/pdfs/Network_Services_v10.4.pdf
That's pretty much the way I learned how to run DNS in OS X Server.
Best of luck to you.

Note also that the forums are the proper venue for asking and answering questions since there the discussion is public and others can contribute and (most importantly) others with similar problems can benefit from the discussion.
Asking questions via private messaging should be reserved for things that need to be private, or which concern only the one person.

I get a pretty good number of direct questions via IM and such myself, and refer people back to the forum. If I had the answer, I would have posted it, and then it would be on the forum for others to benefit from. If I don't have time or don't know the answer to post in the forum, I won't have it for a PM either.
Many times when someone asks "Why would you do that" it ends up in finding out that the question wasn't really the right question. Many times the person asking is really trying to do something else, and incorrectly assumed they needed this one step. Around here, people discuss efficient use, security, and processes just as much as straight technical issues.
As far as post-whoring, that's a hell of an assumption you're making there. I can't think of anyone with such a flabby ego here that they measure their self-worth by post count.
Woohoo! One more post for me!

sometimes people ask what you are trying to accomplish (or as why as you state) to see if maybe there is an alternate solution, or to perhaps give their experience with what you have stated.
More informatoin is needed, simply asking how to set up DNS is a broad question, and there are many more than one way to skin a cat.
I do agree with you on some extent though. Some people do have a plethora of unneeded questions asked in some threads. Where other questions asked I think are completely valid to give a proper answer.

I'm sorry.. you've been a registered member of the site for 4 days, are you really qualified to say this and mean it? I'm fairly certain you've not been a lurker. I should point out that this site has 56,177 threads, 310,460 posts, and 43,755 members. It's not huge, but it's an excellent resource. I too think it has potential, and it's lived up to a lot of it over the many years of it's existence.
That being said..
I read through that thread and I really don't see what the big deal is. Questions were asked because more information was needed to help narrow down what you wanted to accomplish. Just because someone says I want to do X means they actually want to do X. More often than not, questions require answers in order to get to the heart of the issue.
Don't forget.. as with most forums, you get what you pay for. The forums at MacOSXHints has provided excellent technical support for many, many, many people.. free of charge. None of us are paid to do this, we do it from the kindness of our hearts.

It's more the principle than the principal?
