My Nano was purchased as soon as they came out last year, and I've used it exclusively on my Mac at home. Now that I've got an XP machine in my office, I'd like to be able to use my Nano here at work and listen to my music via iTunes.

Unfortunately, I get the dreaded message when plugging in my iPod:

"An iPod has been detected, but the iPod software is not installed. Please install the iPod software from the CD that came with your iPod ..." etc.

Back in the day, I was able to fiddle with my older iPod and get it to be recognized by both my Mac and my PC. Is there still some way to do this? I thought this Nano was 'agnostic' -- that it should have been able to work with iTunes in the Mac and Windows world. Was I hopelessly naive?

I really miss listening to my music here at work! :(

Crossing my fingers that I can find a way to make this work.

Since you started out with a Mac, your Nano is most likely formatted as HFS+ which can't be read by Windows machines. You would need to reformat your Nano on a PC as FAT32 disk. Then you would then have to install the iPod software on it by using the Windows version of iPod software on a PC. There after, it will recognized by both the Mac and PC. Macs can work with FAT32.

Note: Disk Utility on the Mac could reformat it to FAT16, but not FAT32. In any case you'll need a PC to install the iPod software compatible with FAT16 or FAT32.
