Hi: OS X.3.9; printer: HP Laserjet 4MP; router: Asante 3004FLC with builtin print server. The printer works fine thru the same router, in wXPSP2. The printer is completely Mac compatible, & did work before in X (I think; it worked & I had classic & classic word processing apps as well as X word processing apps).

Had to reinstall OS & can't get the settings right. Lately, in terminal, lpq command gets answer "_192.168.123.254 is not ready" or "printer problem" (no quotes, but there is that odd underscore before the IP address, which is the router's). The job is listed as stopped in the print manager.

Downloaded latest drivers from HP for this model, april 06. Also X.3.9 probably has good drivers built in. Here's the questions, related to "printer setup utility":
- IP Printing? Is there another choice for network?
-Printer type: the choices are LPD/LPR, internet printing protocol, Rendezvous and Socket/HP Jet Direct. Tried LPD/LPR & internet printing protocol. Choosing LPD/LPR, the job stopped. Choosing internet printing protocol, I got several messages. At first, terminal said (no quotes) "_192.168.123.254 is ready and printing" but the printer server light doesn't blink (as it should if it's moving the signal on) and nothing prints. The Mac says it's sending the signal, but the router isn't receiving it. Now it gives the "printer problem" message as above and job is stopped. Rendezvous doesn't see this printer at all.

-Printer Address: shouldn't this be the router address (192.168.123.254)?
-queue name: left blank or what should be in there?

I left the queue name blank. I also tried using the CUPS/Gimp print software OS X CDs came with. Still no printing.
Is there a solution? Thanks.

I left a response for you on Apple Discussions.
Short version - the device-specific queue name is required for the LPD or IPP protocols.
