Hi

Just read that when I signed up, and I'm sure it annoys some people but from someone who's had to close off all there forums from many an afternoon of deleteing spam from forums and blog comments I think its a good ideas.

Can you give me some hints either open here or via pm on how you implement that and moderate it.

I may actually be able to start providing forums again.

But what if the first two automated posts are designed to get past your security, some of the early garbage on my message boards say what I nice site I have and than further down in the posting lists starts the garbage.

The first two posts are manually read by human beings. After that, they can freely post unless a mod or admin catches them spamming. Which rarely happens.

Simply put, if you are having problems with spam, usually, I'd just increase the number of moderators (Talking about the forum). Maybe 1 mod to every 100 members (Make that 1 mod/50 members if its really bad). As I've experienced, having a nice load of mods ensures your problems go away in a matter of minutes, not hours.

I use YaBB (http://www.yabbforum.com/downloads.php). ("Yet Another Bulletin Board"), Free, easy, full of features, and no need to have all this confusing MySQL database stuff. The guys in suits on the front page make the site look weird (in my opinion) for some reason... Nevermind. Anyway...

Many people can't get dozens of mods to watch their forum 24/7.

As a general rule, disable guest posting, enable the Captcha (the squiggly letters image thing), enable the e-mail verification, and add a simple word filter to disable most spam URLs, so Google can't spider them and make the spam site's pagerank go up. I made a list that works about 85% of the time.

For example, "Buy meds new cheap online at http://www.medcenterrxbuymart.org"
would turn into: "Buy SPAM new cheap online at http://www.SPAMcenterrxbuymart.org"

which would lead to a server not found

You can see my YaBB forum here: http://bigpixel.macintoshdevelopers.net/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl
I get only a 1 or 2 spam posts a week. Usually deleted within a day. Much less real posts.
