I just plugged my ipod into my computer and got the message "the iPod cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-51). "

I have searched high and low for any info on error message -51 but can't find anything. i cannot remove or add any songs to my ipod. i'm afraid that if i restore it, i'll still be unable to add songs and at that point it will be empty.

I've downloaded the most recent version of ITunes and the ipod software update but neither of those has corrected the problem.

Has anyone heard of this error message before?

Thanks!

What kind of iPod? If it's Firewire (Dock Connector), try USB. Vice versa. My 4G iPod won't work with Firewire, and it gives me the same exact error. Over USB 2, it works fine.

If you can get it to mount on the desktop, run it through Disk Utility's disk check, and see if it turns up anything.
