Constantly Need to Restore (4th Gen/20GB)

I have a 4th Gen. 20GB ipod and itunes is constantly telling me that it can't read the contents of my ipod. Sometimes restarting it helps and sometimes it doesn't, so I restore and have to put all the music back only to have it do the same thing a couple weeks later. Other than this it doesn't exhibit any other problems.

Repairing using Disk Utility didn't do anything (it was all clear). I was going to try to erase it using Disk Utility but it said that it "may disable some of the ipod's functionality" which sort of freaked me out.

What can I do?
