View Full Version : mp3 unplayable: octet stream data fixable?

I've had this problem more than one time. Some mp3 files I try to play to preview an album before buying it are unplayable. iTunes won't even load these files, nor will other mp3 players. File typing software identifies them as a mime type file of octet stream-data. Attempting to open these files with Amadeus yields a message indicating that they are of a file type that QuickTime can't play. Amadeus will import them as raw data but attempting to save them as mp3 files results in files of varying megabytes but have no sound. Virus scans, of course, reveal nothing. Attempting to add id tags to the files accomplishes nothing (although I don't really know what I'm doing), even when working in Windows (via Parallels).

I've received these files from various friends who use Windows machines to rip the files (although Windows players won't open them either). Somehow it seems they are being converted to something else by the time they arrive to me through the internet. Perhaps my friends have formed a conspiracy to drive me crazy and are only claiming that the files are playable before sending them to me.

Does anyone have any idea how one of these files might be fixed? Can anyone recommend a consultant or business that might be able to render them playable or at least attempt to do so?

Thanks very much.

fwiw, i have the same problem. a stack of Johnny Cash CDs that were ripped as MP3s, but somehow they're unplayable. I viewed them with FileX (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18273), and they show up as having MIME type application/octet-stream. Can't find a solution either..
