stumped in ca

I have 1600 songs in i-tunes approx 1/2 purchased, 1/2 downloaded from cd's.
only 500 go into my ipod. there are exlamation marks on the far left column of my i-tunes, and i get error messages that i-tunes cannot locate the songs, I know they are there....but do not transfer to my ipod. any help would be appreciated

itunes makes links to the original song files on your computer's hard drive rather then actually storing them. the exlamation mark means the link has been broken to the song and iTunes doesn't know where its at.

You can try to manually locate the songs and redirect iTunes to them.

Alternatively, if you can locate the songs on your hard disk, then just drag them into iTunes again. If the tags are set, the it should ask you if you want to replace the existing songs.

Now, if you have iTunes set so that it doesn't copy the songs to the library then all it will do is update the broken links.

I'd recommend trying it with just one or two songs first to see if it works as expected.
