View Full Version : Transferring iPod "sync" from one computer to another

I have this great, great 80G iPod, that I use extensively for music and videos.

So far, I have been "managing" it from the iTunes on my XP machine.
The sync setup I have is that music and videos are managed manually, and contacts are sync'ed with outlook.

Now, I recently purchased a MacBook (black) to use to actually manage my music collection. Now that I have transferred all the files, updated the tags, etc... I want the iPod to sync its music from the iTunes library in the MacBook.

Note, I am not asking how to get the stuff in the iPod out of it...

What I would like to know is what will happen to the VIDEO files currently in the iPod if I set it to sync its music (and only the music) with the powerbook ?

I have gone so far in iTunes that I set the settings I want for the music, then I get a dire warning that 'All existing content on the iPod "name" will be removed and replaced with songs and playlists from your iTunes library.'

Is it just that the 'language' has not been updated since iPod g4, and I can safely assume my video files (and contacts, etc...) are safe if I sync my music with the Mac?

Thanks for any comments. I am sure that others have faced the same dilemma before...

if you continue with the proccess... iTunes will blank your iPod.....

Then.... you will be able put everything that is in your Mac's iTunes (Music, Video, AddressBook contacts and iCal's) back on it.

If your Music, Video, contacts and iCals are showing up in iTunes, iCal and AB on your Mac they will sync to the iPod.

So the critical thing is make sure every bit of data you want is backed up before you proceed!

As Photek said if you can continue it will wipe your ipod. Unfortunately you can't have an ipod that will sync with a Pc and a Mac. you can use it as a portable drive for files of any kind from either platform but you can not view/play them.(without opening as you would with any normal portable HDD) everything you want to view or play must be all Mac or all PC.
Good luck.

use ipod rip to copy everything on to Mac,
then let iTunes wipe the ipod,
then import the material into iTunes,
sync to Mac & you're done!

BAC999 is right, it sucks that you have to rip from ipod to itunes, then from itunes back to the ipod, but its the only way, if you want to sync. I beleive you can do it manually though. I could be wrong.

Thanks a lot for your advice.

I followed your tips, and ripped everything from the iPod onto the mac with iPodRip.

Indeed, once I set the iPod to sync its music from the mac, the mac deleted the entire contents of the iPod.

It took a couple of hours for all my music and video to sync back onto the iPod, but now all is set and working perfectly.

It occurs to me that with the volume of data people manage these days, it would not be unreasonably to expect that some people would use separate computers to handle their video and their music... It would be nice if the iTunes/iPod system could take that into consideration.

Thanks again.
